artist statement.

Creating is my compulsion. Feeling free is my passion. In 2019 I discovered how to combine them: intuitive abstract art changed everything.

This is what I am supposed to be doing.

I have always been inspired by nature – its power, expansiveness, textures and colours, its complexity, its simplicity. Being immersed in nature is the closest I’ve ever been to having a spiritual experience. Nature inspires and informs my work.

I paint mainly in mixed media with the versatility of acrylics offering the foundation of my work and graphite, pastels, crayons, collage adding excitement, texture and interest. My process centres around playing with colour, marks, texture and shape – and then responding to that play.

Whether I’m in my studio or winding down the coast on a motorcycle – or in my kitchen dancing at the family dance parties – for me it’s always about getting in that zone where nothing else matters but the moment – and having the freedom to really feel, express and play.

This is what I say yes to. This is what I hope you feel when you experience my work.

biography.

Kim Money was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Kim spent much of her youth there before moving to Victoria, BC in her teens and attending Oak Bay High. With the benefit of two amazing high school art teachers, Kim started to seriously consider following a path of a life in art. Kim was accepted into Alberta College of Art right out of high school. She got her first motorcycle the next year and fell in love with the wind, excitement, and freedom.

Understanding she could not live on popcorn for more than a couple years, she dropped out of college temporarily to take a construction job to re-fill a depleted bank account. That lasted 10 years.

Life happened, as it so often does, seeing the bike, the wind and the paint brushes set-aside for diapers and the raising of two (wonderful) kids. Her art pursuit was relegated to on-and-off dabbling, the odd airbrush or sewing class and some sporadic painting sessions.

Fast forward – after a lot of life – she finally returned to paint, her first love.

1991 to 2019 saw Kim paint in expressive realism with still life as a favoured subject. In 2019 Kim entered into Nicholas Wilton’s Creative Visionary Program and discovered intuitive abstract art. The rest is history.
